I Want Peace

One day life came knocking at my door…

Just the way I am!

Everyone has a unique style of living. Every person was born unique and therefore what might be an attractive proportion for one might seem worthless to another.

Some people like to earn only to spend. Some like to work hard just because the satisfaction is overwhelming, some don’t give up their stressful because the adrenaline rush means life to them! Some find it hard to do justice with their personal lives because of their professions and willingly choose to quit the later and devote themselves whole-heartedly and happily to their personal lives. Some move to a lesser-known land just to escape the rut that they consider themselves in and take upon themselves the task of adapting and becoming a part of the new environment. Some move to a “place of opportunities”, as they call it, meaning thereby a land where jobs abandon and life is fast-paced and mechanical. Some do the opposite and move to a quiet, serene place with just enough to keep them happy.

The world is full of examples. If we set forth to find and decide once and for all, what’s right and what’s wrong, we probably would never be able to come to a consensus because there is no set benchmark for each of the several trillion people in the world.

Life is a journey and with or without our will, we have to be a part of that journey. It’s up to us to make it a joyous or a miserable one.

Being different from the others, more often than not, we tend to watch and observe closely. Some people’s lifestyles seem really attractive and we long to emulate them. What we sometimes fail to realize, however, is the fact that those people were born with a different set of values, a different soul with its own unique impressions acquired over several past births and actually a completely different temperament. Therefore, what’s working well with them might turn out to be a disaster for us.

The other thing we fail to realize is the fact that the things that seem impressive about the other person right now are actually not the complete story. We see the big, tinted windows but do not see the misery and troubles behind the dark glass-panes. We look at a man receiving a national award but are unaware of all that he has borne and will continue to bear for that award.

Looking at successful personalities and getting infected with the success bug is not an unwanted thing but keeping in mind one’s own personal strengths, likes, dislikes, values and beliefs is also important. Treading on the path that means the most to you is the way to go for being successful. Someone who loves to dance will probably excel at dancing more than at writing or oration. It’s important to see where your personal love lies.

At the same time, it’s also necessary to understand that the personal interest is not in conflict with our personal values. We start proceeding towards an ambition with full vigour because the end prospects interest and attract us. More than half-way later we realize that we have crushed some of our personal values during the journey. Discomfort sets in and the process that was supposed to have given us pure pleasure leaves us instead with heart-sores.

This is all because we don’t try to understand our own selves enough to keep ourselves happy. We need to be mindful of our personalities and the least we can do for ourselves is not to hurt ourselves by disregarding our own dispositions and trying to flow with what we see. As the US transcendentalist author, Henry David Thoreau says, “If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away”.
